By Ron Marinelli, Director of Facilities, Lopatcong Township School District

Lopatcong Township School District is a public school district located in Warren County New Jersey that serves approximately 900 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The district is made up of two schools, the elementary school at 57,240 square feet and the middle school at 99,000 square feet. Making a difference has been my own personal goal for the past three years while serving as director of facilities.

I believe that there is no excellence without passion. Throughout the past three years I could clearly see the wasted energy in our school. We had no control over our two facilities and this was resulting in high utility bills. With a plan in mind we first gained control over our facilities by introducing an upgrade to our automation system to gain control and help to reduce the building demand.

I had put both facilities on a schedule through the automation system instead of units coming on all at once, again helping to reduce our facility demand.
Seeking more ways to yet squeeze juice from the orange, I introduced our school district to North America Power Partners. We enrolled in two programs offered through North America Power Partners, self schedule and spinning reserve. The results from these programs have yielded our district outstanding results. We have currently sold back over 896 hours of electric without the interruption of any academic time. My goal by September 2009 is to have 1000 hours sold back.
As a result to this, our peak load demand has gone from 286 to 175 at our middle school and from 198 to 89 at our elementary school.

Through the 2008 school year, we reduced over 470 tons of CO2, equivalent to the removal of 80 cars off the road. Or, better said our entire staff walking to work for entire year. Setting out to make a difference soon became a standard and as time went on our district became even more energy efficient. Our electric went down 17% and gas consumption dropped 13% with a total cost of operation down by 30%.

In the continued pursuit of saving energy, we embarked on a lighting upgrade at our elementary facility changing out from T-12 to T-8 & T-5 with electronic ballasts, adding to our savings in energy we reduced 10,500 Kw. Recently doing lighting upgrades to our middle school gym from 250 Watt medial halide to 4 lamp fixtures T-8. I am very proud to say our district has been recognized by North America Power Partners as “Client of the Month” and also recognized by Building Magazine ” Who’s Who” as among the top 43 facilities in the nation. Goals need to be set. Without goals we have nothing to strive for.

We all need to strive and help save a little more energy. We are only a two school district, and if we can have this much of an impact just think of what your five and six school districts can do. This is proof positive that you do not need to be a big district to make a big difference.

Laurie Wiegand-Jackson, President of North America Power Partners has completed a series of speaking engagements across the USA as an advocate for Demand Response and its role as a financial solution in these challenging economic times. Most recently she spoke at the American Institute of Steel Technology’s annual conference in St. Louis, MO to participants in the steel industry, an industry hard hit by the recession. Her talk titled “Demand Response: How Facilities can be Paid a Recurring Revenue Stream to Improve Grid Reliability and Lower Wholesale Prices” was well received. She is currently a member of the Energy and Utilities Committee of AIST.

In April Wiegand-Jackson traveled to Atlanta, GA, to speak at the FMA Congress, the 3rd show in a series on Progressive Energy and the Environment. NAPP was a sponsor of the conference which focused on energy reduction, environmental sustainability and green data centers. Laurie also spoke at the Peak Load Management Alliance (PLMA) conference in Annapolis, MD to an audience of utility companies and energy industry executives with a speech titled “Demand Response: Paving the Way for the New Energy Alternatives”. She spoke on demand response and its direct relationship to reduced carbon emissions, an environmental added-value resulting from Demand Response programs. With a new carbon cap and trade system in place in the northeast, emission reduction is a hot topic in the power sector, a sector tasked with reducing their carbon footprint.

In June, Ms. Wiegand-Jackson will be speaking at the West Coast Energy Management Congress in Long Beach California, where the company operates a Demand Response program for Southern California Edison.

“This is an exciting time in the energy industry, and yet we are in the midst of the worst economic crisis in decades,” says Ms. Wiegand Jackson. “We could say that these are the best of times and the worst of times. Much is happening in the energy sector that is supporting the development of new energy efficiency and renewable energy programs including the development of Demand Response resources across the United States. NAPP is committed to helping our customers make the most of these new energy initiatives in the midst of these challenging times.”

By speaking to audiences across the nation, Laurie Wiegand- Jackson is spreading the word on the value of demand response, the energy efficiency voice of the future, bringing “Smart Grid” technology to aging electric grids and to utilities across the USA.

About North America Power Partners

North America Power Partners (NAPP) is a privately held energy service company headquartered in New Jersey. The company is a leading provider of Demand Response resources across the United States. NAPP enables its customers to participate in a range of wholesale electric and utility based programs, including peak capacity, spinning reserves, and self scheduled energy. Our demand response solutions include advanced metering with web based reporting tools as well as engineering audits, automation and controls.

NAPP is a visionary leader in the energy industry. NAPP has the technical proficiency to design and develop programs that are essential to a “Smart Grid” while creating Demand Response solutions to meet the evolving global climate challenge.

The CPUC approved NAPP’s contract submitted for approval by Edison based on the overall cost effectiveness of these contracts. In a press release dated March 13, 2008, CPUC Commissioner Rachelle Chong stated, “This decision represents a careful balance of our strong encouragement for more demand response programs by the utilities and ensuring that the contracts are cost effective to protect our ratepayers’ interest.”

North America Power Partners’ customers cut back on their use of electricity at times when the distribution grid is constrained or in jeopardy. By reducing their demand, these customer are acting as a new resource for the utility system operators. These reductions allow the utility to more efficiently meet the growing demand for electricity and maintain overall grid reliability. “The contract adds to Southern California Edison’s ability to reduce energy costs and to protect the reliability of the grid during critical times of high demand and short supply”, said Lawrence M. Oliva, SCE’s director of Tariff Programs and Services department.

North America Power Partners is pleased to expand its unique program offerings to large and medium sized businesses throughout the Southern California Region. Customers will receive payments for their participation in the program while acknowledging that they are doing their part to improve the electric system reliability and the environment .
